Spooky Marvin hosted a last minute show at the American Legion in Highland Park. I was fortunate enough to see the invite on the band's Instagram. I had heard some of Spooky Marvin's music at the Best Day Ever event about a month ago. I knew that I needed to once again see the band in action. I caught the last-minute train to Highland Park and lugged my gear to the venue.
After some wrong turns and mild confusion, I found the American Legion. The building itself was definitely part of a long-gone era. The walls were brick, the lights were dim, and the flooring was stained wood with years worth of scratches. This was an intimate space.
I was able to briefly meet with Spooky Marvin before they went on. We spoke a bit about the PSY event, the work I'm doing with Peace Circus Magazine, and where to put the merchandise table. Shortly after our conversation, the event began.
Unlike most of Spooky Marvin's shows, the band's attire was tame. (Not that I prefer one way or another. I believe the music will sound the same with or without the lead singer having a shirt on.)
Spooky Marvin began their set as fans gathered around the stage. The crowd grew throughout the performance, leaving the band definitely with some new lifelong fans. At the last song, the lead singer of Spooky Marvin jumped off stage while playing and danced along in a circle, continuing to play the guitar in the body of the crowd.
As expected, it was a good show.
